Port Monitoring

Real-time port surveillance and control at the Port of Oslo improves safety, operational efficiency, and situational awareness at Norway’s largest port.

Located at the heart of Norway’s capital, the Port of Oslo is the country’s largest public cargo and passenger port and a natural logistics hub for Norwegian industry. From Oslo, half of Norway's population can be reached within three hours, underscoring its central role in national trade and transport.

In 2024, the port handled 5.4 million tonnes of cargo and 7.7 million travellers, making it Norway's most important gateway for freight, ferries, and cruise operations. With a clear vision to become the world's first zero-emission urban port, the Port of Oslo has committed to an 85% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030. Through collaboration with partners and stakeholders, the port is phasing out fossil fuels, improving energy efficiency, and safeguarding the ecological health of the Oslofjord.

Port Control vessel "Pelikan 2"

As part of its environmental management efforts, the Port of Oslo conducts regular inspections and waste collection using the all-electric service vessel Pelikan 2, equipped with Ocean Visuals' SEA OWL™ hyperspectral LiDAR sensor system for continuous, zero-emission environmental monitoring.

SEA OWL™ on Pelikan 2

Purpose-built for floating-waste recovery, Pelikan 2 uses a hydraulic basket and dual cranes to reach shoreline areas. Its 554 kWh Corvus Orca Energy battery system, supported by solar panels for navigation instruments, enables 8-12 hours of fully electric operation and recharges in approximately two hours.

Integrated with OWL™ MAP, our real-time visualisation and alert platform, the crew monitors live, geo-referenced readings for oil-in-water, organic compounds, and underwater visibility. Our system automatically transmits and visualises data to the Harbour Master's Office and Port Control, providing a shared operational overview and enabling rapid, coordinated response when pre-set detection thresholds are exceeded.

Ocean Visuals' Contribution in the Oslofjord

Operating in the ecologically sensitive Oslofjord, the Port of Oslo depends on reliable and advanced monitoring solutions to safeguard marine life while maintaining efficient port operations. The integration of Ocean Visuals' SEA OWL™ technology aboard Pelikan 2 strengthens the port's environmental management and directly supports its zero-emission and sustainability objectives.

With real-time data from the SEA OWL™ system, the Port of Oslo can:

  • Detect and respond rapidly to oil, organic pollutants, and changes in water visibility, ensuring immediate environmental protection.
  • Visualise and share live data through OWL™ MAP, enabling fast, informed decision-making across teams.
  • Sustain continuous monitoring from zero-emission vessels, reinforcing the port's mission to eliminate fossil fuel use in maritime operations.

Ocean Visuals is proud to support the Port of Oslo's environmental leadership. By delivering precise, actionable insights, our technology empowers the port's capacity to protect the Oslofjord, enhance operational efficiency, and advance its vision of a zero-emission future.
